The Worst Person to Eat Lunch With

Can small talk make you sleepy? Schmoozing with coworkers at lunch may leave you fatigued, says new research from the University of Toronto.

Employees reported their lunch habits over 10 days, while their coworkers separately answered surveys about how tired their colleagues seemed. While laboring through lunch made workers appear more drained, they actually felt less tired if they skipped out on socializing.

That doesn’t mean you should be a hermit every lunch hour. But if you’re pressured to mingle with employees you don’t feel comfortable around, putting on a fake face can be tiring, says study author John Trougakos, Ph.D.

Reluctant to refuse a lunch invite? Fight fatigue by eating outside, since sunlight can energize you, according to a University of Sussex study. Invite your colleagues to join, but refrain from talking shop: It defeats the purpose of taking a break, Trougakos says.
