The Resume is Not Dead

From time to time, you will find experts declaring the death of the resume. The resume has been replaced by an email pitch! A video resume! Networking! Your blog! Your LinkedIn profile!

Well, consider this: have you ever gone into an interview where the employer did not have a resume and you couldn’t produce one? It could be quite awkward.

It is exciting to think something so integral to the job search, like the resume, is finished and to make way for something new, especially if it is technology based but it is simply not true!

At the end of the day, the employer wants to see your resume. There is no better document that can clearly summarize your relevant skills, experience and abilities for the job. The resume is the one piece that the employer can use to quickly evaluate you.

Now, is the resume the be all and end all of getting a job, dead? Yes. I am not sure if the resume was ever the only method to success, no matter the era.

What is true and what the experts are getting at with their blustery words is that you need more than the resume. In fact, you need a strategy for your resume to even be read.

What do you need to succeed?

1. A cover letter that is targeted to the position and demonstrates how you can help the company.

2. A referral from someone in the company.

3. An email address of someone in the position to hire so that your resume will actually be looked at.

4. An online presence- including a sharp LinkedIn profile- that further reinforces the points in your resume.

So don’t delete that resume just yet!
