Why? Because when those people do LinkedIn database searches, the first names they see in their results are their first level connections, then their second level connections, then their third level connections, and then common group members.
I see this every day. My first level connections almost always come up first in my search results. Test it yourself. Still need convincing? A recent TechCrunch interview with Brad Mauney, LinkedIn’s Group Product Manager for Identity Products, noted, “LinkedIn is putting more emphasis on results that fall within your own network…” Uh huh.
